Scottish FFA Timeline

With dedication, expertise and passion the Scottish FFA has launched!

However The Scottish Female Futsal Alliance started from the hardships of Canning Coaching, pioneers of girls futsal in Scotland. The Journey of SFFA starts with the showcase of these girls who helped break barriers and change the perception female football and promote futsal for girls

Our Scottish FFA journey starts with the raise of Canning Coaching, a completed girls focused organisation who came from humble beginnings but are leading the way for the girls and women's game.

Canning Coaching started with 13 players in Glenrothes by highly respected coach Fraser Canning who started his academy to give back to his local community in Fife after coaching out with Fife for almost all his career. Fed up with the lack of opportunities in Fife and a new found passion for female football. Canning Coaching was formed.

Fraser innovative system is often described as a "hybrid academy" where through Canning Coaching female players receive professional level coaching, a structured player pathway and development plan, a proven girls specific curriculum and all the other benefits of professional academies in which previously local talent would of needed to travel and leave their clubs for.

March 2023 - The launch of Canning Coaching

Canning Coaching expanded from one group to into multiple groups with Fraser's players making clear progress and attracting more players at higher levels. Canning Coaching introduced a new "performance academy" group to give Fifes top talent a more competitive and higher level environment. Fraser felt he could offer everything a professional academy could offer except from one thing........ Matches

Fraser's forward thinking led him to entering his girls performance academy team into a boys winter futsal league with the aim of bringing together top talent from various clubs in Fife together to play in a more challenging environment just like at professional academies.

October 2023 - Canning enters in boys futsal league

The Winter futsal league exposed these girls to a whole new world. Despite getting beat 26-6 in their first game! with 2 extra players playing! The Canning girls remained resilient in the league and not only narrowed the score lines but also picked up a few points by the end of the season. With their own player Samantha being voted player of the league, beating male opposition at professional academies to win this award.

Canning Coaching entered the same league a year later this time with 2 of their girls teams, again the only 2 girls teams in the league. After more futsal experience, opportunities, coaching and training, the girls became the team to beat in the league. With their first team finishing 2nd only 3 point behind top spot and their 2nd team (Mainly girls playing above their age) finishing 6th. Yet again a Canning Girl was award player of the league, this time it was Rose who stood out

2024/25 - Changing perceptions in boys legaue

Canning Coaching's progress in the boys leagues changed the perceptions of girls football and also helped futsal become more attractive for female players.

As Canning Coaching grow in Fife from one group of 13 girls to a pathway of 6 groups split into 3 categories. Pre academy, Development program and performance academy, their wider impact on  girls football and the growth of futsal across Scotland also grow.

Canning Coaching in-between boys leagues have led the way in Scotland through female futsal competitions as well. Supporting YFS host the Australian national team on several occasions through the Scossie Cup which also featured professional girls academies who were able to get a taste of futsal.

Consistently seek more opposition and wanting to put Scottish Futsal on the map Fraser organised trips for his players at Various age groups to international tournaments where they played futsal and 3v3's against elite level boys and girls teams.

2024/25 - The growth of Girls Futsal

After seeing the benefits of futsal whilst also seeing the lack of opportunities in Scotland for girls in futsal Fraser decided to work on a vision that would later become the Scottish Female Futsal Alliance.

Canning Coaching were at the time the only girls organisation regularly training and playing competitive futsal. Fraser seen this as a problem for his own players development having limited competition to challenge them and also for Scottish football as a whole, feeling many elite players are missing out on the development and progression futsal can offer as well as at a participation level how futsal can be a fun way of developing players core skills and confidence.

Overtime Fraser and Canning Coaching started promoting futsal and sharing their resources with other originations. Fraser reached out to university teams for friendlies and to learn more about women's futsal at university level and offered support to any future girls futsal teams

2025 - Early formation of the Alliance

This would later form the Scottish FFA. The alliance has brough together both experienced individuals and originations with various skills, experiences, resources and from all over Scotland at difference levels.  The key aim of the alliance is to work together on a collective goal of promoting futsal and providing more futsal opportunities for girls and women in Scotland.
